Who are Far Horizons?

Established in South Australia in 1976 by Martin and Auriel Wright, Far Horizons is celebrating its 31st year of operating specialised, escorted, small group tours "off the beaten track".

Tours for Travellers or Tourists

It is said that the difference between a traveller and a tourist is that a traveller doesn't know where he is going, and a tourist doesn't know where he has been. In which case Far Horizons tours are for neither travellers nor tourists. Rather, they are for discriminating, adventurous people who value the opportunity to witness some of the world's most fascinating regions in the maximum degree of comfort and style which is available. The success of this approach can be judged by the fact that an average of at least 70% of the passengers on any tour will have travelled with us before, and some of our strongest supporters have taken over twenty tours with us.

Off the Beaten Track

Throughout our many years in travel we have always shunned the commonplace, the hackneyed, and have sought out new and wider horizons. Our travels have taken us to all continents, and our many friends and contacts all over the world have given us an "open sesame" to regions that only the most intrepid traveller would venture into alone.

Best Accommodation

Far Horizons provides the best accommodation in the world's most exotic and stimulating regions. Wherever possible hotels are chosen for their character and ambience in addition to their high standards of comfort and cuisine. In some of the "off the beaten track" places we visit, the "best available" is the "only available". Nevertheless standards in even the remotest regions are usually perfectly acceptable. On the few occasions we are obliged to lower our standards, a special warning is made on the General Information page.

Fully Inclusive

All tours are as fully inclusive as possible, i.e. all transportation, accommodation, sightseeing, meals, cultural events and gratuities. You need budget only for personal spending money.

Carefully Planned

The itineraries are planned to provide the 'right' mix of travel, leisure and sightseeing. Wherever possible we select flights that depart and arrive at "civilised" hours, and overnight flights are kept to an absolute minimum. Overland journeys are planned to include plenty of stops en route, and long, fatiguing journeys are avoided. In addition to traditional, well-appointed air-conditioned motor coaches, we occasionally use unconventional forms of travel to reach unusual places - river boat, lake steamer, cruise ship, ferry and four-wheel drive. We hurry across oceans, but we linger through the countryside. We see how people live, we assimilate their culture, we admire their scenery, we watch them at work and we see them at play.

Personally Escorted

Every Far horizons tour is escorted by an experienced, qualified tour escort, whose principal role is to ensure the smooth running of the tour and to take care of all the irksome formalities. This includes the porterage of suitcases, checking-in at hotels and airports, handling of boarder formalities, tipping, reconfirmation of flights and any other inevitable complications which can so frustrate the independent traveller.

Experts on Tap

In addition to the services of your tour escort, fully experienced local guides will join us at each stage of the journey. They are a mine of information and will delight in showing you the special attractions of their homeland.

Limited Capacity

In order to foster that special feeling of camaraderie which we consider essential to the complete success of a tour, we strictly limit the number of places on each tour to sixteen. The average size of a tour is twelve.

Sit back and Relax

Your holiday is a time for relaxation and the shedding of cares. Save your energy for sightseeing and let somebody else do all the donkey work. That someone else is your tour escort. The checking in and claiming of baggage at airports, the paying of airport taxes and gratuities, registration at hotels, reconfirmation of flights, arranging of meals and transportation, obtaining tickets for cultural events, all the irksome formalities and hassles that confront the independent traveller - these are all largely taken care of, while you just sit back and relax.

Welcome to our Friendly World

Far Horizons is now more like a select club than a tour company. It is not at all unusual for a tour to be a grand reunion of old friends - although newcomers are always made to feel warmly welcome. Far Horizons seems to attract like-minded people........people who shun the commonplace, who are more interested in the people, culture and scenery of a strange land than in the tinsel and glitter of big cities and sophisticated resorts.

A Dash of Philosophy

Our passengers tend to be people of understanding and tolerance, who appreciate that not all of God's children follow the same ideology or maintain the same set of values as we do, who will accept that even the best-planned itineraries are susceptible to political influences, airline delays and other surprises which will keep your tour escort on his toes.

If you are this sort of person, then welcome to the World of Far Horizons.
